Do you have a project idea that could help reduce carbon emissions in the Malvern Hills District? We want to hear your ideas.
Malvern Hills District Council is making a dedicated funding pot available through the crowdfunding platform, Spacehive, to fund projects which support local, community-led initiatives that contribute towards the Destination Zero Plan.
Destination Zero is our plan to reach net-zero carbon emissions in district as quickly as possible but by 2050 at the latest, by addressing key areas such as energy efficiency, renewable energy, low carbon transport and habitat restoration. Read more about the Destination Zero Plan.
We want to get people talking, inspire them and encourage them to create projects within their communities that will help create a greener, more sustainable district. By sharing these ideas, it could inspire a group to develop a project and help make them a reality.

Encourage parents to walk children to school
Measures such as: Ensure that there are adequate safe routes to schools; e.g enforce not parking on pavements which can block pushchairs, ensure crossings and pavements are maintained Enforce parking restrictions around schools Work with schools to push positive messages around walking rather than driving

Habitat restoration: Swifts
Malvern has many streets suitable for nesting swifts. The population of swifts has declined for many years due to a lack of nesting sites, they nest almost exclusively in the eaves of houses, Malvern has large numbers of suitable houses, but over the years they tend to acquire new rooves or UPVC soffits and the small holes swifts use to access their nesting cavities are lost. This is probably the limiting factor reducing the numbers of these iconic birds. In some towns and cities 'swift Street events' have been held where suitable streets or areas are brought together and awareness of this problem is raised in the community. In some cases 40% of the householders in a Street have taken part in allowing swift boxes to be attached to the eaves of their houses. Boxes can be provided at cost and local tradesmen with cherry pickers and ladders can be involved in putting the boxes up at a subsidised price (with H and Safety regs putting the boxes up is half the battle). I am sectretary of the local Worcester and Malvern RSPB group and we actively run several projects with Councils and landowners to improve the environment, with funding and publicity we could organise and run a such a campaign in conjunction with the Council. In addition to helping swifts such a project would play a part in bringing communities together, and raise awareness of environmental issues.

Widen existing footpath from B&Q and add lighting to provide useful safe pedestrian and cycle route to the retail park.

Put a pavement/cycle path across the Link Common so people can walk safely to the Link Station and not use cars.

bladeless wind turbine
such as this https://vortexbladeless.com/ ... I'm guessing nobody wants those massive 'bladed' wind turbines on the Malverns, but something like this could be a feature rather than an eyesore
